Adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)
Anna Olivares, Nutrition Educator
Low-income families with children are receiving a series of nutrition education classes from the Cooperative Extension federally funded Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), which has existed in San Joaquin County since 1969. We provide group educational workshops that enables participants to improve their diets, shop wisely, prepare and preserve food safely, while learning about good nutrition and health practices. Each agency receives specialized curriculum for their clients. For example, teen moms receive training on infant and toddler nutrition, while mothers in drug recovery programs focus on the relationship between health, eating and their recovery process. As welfare reform spreads throughout San Joaquin County, EFNEP Nutrition Educators are actively working with the following agencies: Early Childhood Education Programs; Child Abuse Prevention Council's Parenting Program; High School Teen Parent Programs; Goodwill Industry's Job Program; Families Overcoming Chemical Using Situations (FOCUS), Family Ties, and Alliance for Infants and Mothers (AIM); Three Rivers Lodge's Drug Recovery Program; Head Start; and Healthy Start Parenting Programs. Last year, more than 500 families improved their nutritional well being as a result of the EFNEP program in San Joaquin County. Contact Anna Olivares at amolivares@ucdavis.edu
